I welcome you with great delight to the website of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, Nigeria. The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at UNIMED consists of the Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology. Anatomy is concerned with the study of the structures of the body at the molecular, cellular, histo-architectural and morphological levels. Biochemistry is concerned with the application of chemistry to the study of biological processes at the molecular and cellular level. Physiology is concerned with the study of how the human body works. Overall, Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology are disciplines concerned with understanding the biology, chemistry and physics underlying basic body functions, from how molecules behave in cells to how body systems and organs work together. Hence, these disciplines are foundational sciences that are essential for medical practice because they help us comprehend what happens in a healthy body during daily activities and what goes wrong when the individual falls sick.
The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at UNIMED was founded on April 22, 2015, with the vision of teaching students of the Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology degree programmes, the medical and dental students, as well as allied health sciences students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels leading to the award of B.Sc., M.B.B.S, BDS, M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees. The Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology all have approved MSc, MPhil., MPhil./PhD and PhD programmes in Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology respectively. Our students are well equipped with the required skills and technical know-how for excellence in the global job market and chosen career endeavours.
Our Faculty workforce presently consists of diligent, passionate, well committed and visionary academic and non-academic staff, including adjunct lecturers and lecturers on sabbatical leave from other institutions across the nation.
Our Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology are fully accredited both by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the National Universities Commission. We have graduated three sets of BSc Anatomy, BSc Biochemistry and BSc Physiology students. In addition, we have conducted Part One professional MBBS/BDS exams for six sets of medical and dental students. Again, on behalf of academic and non-academic staff, I welcome you to the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences!
Sincerely,
Dr. Uhunmwangho Esosa Samuel BSc., MSc., PhD
Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Science
