 INTRODUCTION

Sequel to the application of University of Medical Sciences in August 2017, NUC gave the approval to commence Medical Laboratory Science Program in November 2017 after resource verification. In 2017/2018 academic session, a pioneer intake of forty two (42) students were admitted through the University Matriculation Examination (UME) under the pioneer HOD- Dr A. A. Abubakar, an Associate Professor of MLS appointed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Friday Okonofua FAS. The students were enrolled for the five (5) year study that will lead to award of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) in line with the National Universities Commission recommendations. Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science Degree in UNIMED is a full course system with classified degree but without specialization at this level.

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science comprises of 4 different Units namely: Medical Microbiology/ Parasitology, Hematology/Transfusion Science, Chemical Pathology/ Immunology and Histopathology/ Cytology.

 PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

Medical Laboratory Science entails the study of human and animal tissues, body fluid, excretions and production of materials for the purpose of diagnosis, treatment and research. To a large extent, it is a branch of biomedical sciences that investigates the state of well-being of the person(s) or animal(s) whose tissues or excretion are analyzed.

The broad philosophy of training in medical laboratory science is to: provide sound academic and professional background for the production of Medical Laboratory Scientists who would be capable of working anywhere in Nigeria; produce Medical Laboratory Scientists who would satisfy internationally recognizable standards and could undertake further training towards specialization; produce Medical Laboratory Scientists with sufficient management ability to play a leadership role and entrepreneurship in employing others, establishing self, and also in training and competence in general laboratory practice.

The objectives of the bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) Degree are to:

·     Instil in students a sense of enthusiasm for the profession; an appreciation of its application in different contexts (in areas such as general medicine, food and beverages, pharmaceutical industries, utility departments e.g. water corporations; research institutions, etc.).

·       Involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning, studying and research provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of medical laboratory knowledge and practical skills; performing effectively in clinical diagnostic services, academics and quality assurance; and function independently or in collaboration with other members of the health team in the care of individuals and groups at all levels of health care.

·         Develop in students, the ability to apply their medical laboratory knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in laboratory medicine.

·         Develop in students through an education in medical laboratory sciences, a range of transferable skills of value in medical and non-medical employment.

·         Provide students with a knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas involving medical sciences.

·          Generate in students, an appreciation of the importance of medical laboratory sciences in an industrial, economic, environmental, health and social context.

·        Generate in students with the ability to produce biological and diagnostic reagents as well as being able to fabricate and maintain laboratory equipment.

·         Empower graduates of Medical Laboratory Sciences with skills that will enable them engage in income yielding ventures.
