The mission of the department is to provide sound academic and professional background for our graduates to be capable of working in any medical and industrial laboratory anywhere in the world. We are committed to producing Medical Laboratory Scientists that meets internationally recognizable standards with sufficient knowledge and skills in entrepreneurship, Medical diagnostic services, academics and Research.
I am happy to inform you that you are privileged to be in the hands of well-trained lecturers, instructors and technical staff who combine intellectual ability, wealth of experience and commitment to impact knowledge and skills in you. With the dynamism and experience of these staff, you can be rest assured that your dream of becoming a globally recognized Medical Laboratory Scientist will be a reality. Therefore, if creativity, inspiration, adventure, motivation and integrity are the virtues you’ve been yawning for, then this department is meant for you.
You shall be exposed to some borrowed courses from other departments of the university, this in addition to several courses in our department will mold you with effective communication skills, creative thinking, good ethical practice, laboratory management, logistics and an unbiased interpersonal skills that cuts across gender, racial, cultural, ethnic and religious barriers.
Here in the department of Medical Laboratory Science UNIMED, there is an arrangement for students’ exchange program with students in some other universities of the world. The program is expected to afford our students the opportunity to interact with their foreign counterparts of different racial, cultural and geographical backgrounds. In addition, the program shall serve as foreign link for future research collaborations and avenues for international job opportunities.
On behalf of Medical Laboratory Science family, I welcome you onboard.
Sincerely,
Dr. Oyedeji Samuel Oyewole Ph.D, M.Sc

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the five-year training program at UNIMED leading to the award of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree, our graduates shall be able to effectively:
1. Demonstrate the skills acquired to be experts in phlebotomy and collection of other clinical specimens of human and animal origin and in conducting accurate laboratory analyses on the biological samples for prevention, prompt diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases at all levels of patients in primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary health institutions.
2. Apply some theoretical knowledge, skills, and capacities acquired to be self-employed and be employers of labor in many areas of Medical Laboratory Science
3. Conduct commercial preparation of stains for diagnosis and research purposes, Commercial production of chemicals, reagents, and kits for utilization in industrial and health institutions and glass blowing for domestic, industrial and medical uses
4. Demonstrate the broad and balanced foundation of medical laboratory knowledge and practical skills acquired during training to accurately provide, manage and implement quality assurance in food, beverages, and pharmaceutical industries, petroleum refineries, water corporations and management of supply-chain and logistics in health institutions
5. Apply the skills and competencies gained in the production of animal and human vaccines and in the handling of installations, calibrations, and test-running of newly procured equipment in health institutions
6. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills of evidence-based Medical Laboratory Science to collect, analyze, interpret and disseminate data from subjects and apply previous educational instructions to summarize and present the data and information logically in written and oral formats according to the given guidelines
1. Program: Medical Laboratory Science
2. Program offering: Undergraduate
3. Admission Information
The modes of entry are UTME, direct entry and interuniversity transfer. To be admitted into the B.MLS program the candidate must meet these entry requirements as stated below:
Admission by UTME
Candidates must satisfy the minimum University requirements for Admission and are therefore to obtain at least Credits in English Language, Chemistry, Biology, physics, Mathematics in SSCE or its equivalent in not more than two sittings with approved scores in the Joint Matriculation Examination(UME) and in the post University Matriculation Examination (Post UME).
Admission by Direct Entry
i. Candidates should hold 3 GCE A/L Credit Pass or equivalence in Biology, Chemistry and Physics plus O/L credits in 5 subjects -Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English Language.
ii. B.Sc. degree holders in relevant science discipline like Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, as approved by the Senate of UNIMED with at least second class (lower) degree.
iii. Holders of Medical Laboratory Technician Certificate of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria in addition to credit pass in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English Language at ordinary level.
The B.MLS degree program shall run for 5 years for UTME candidates and 4 years for direct entry candidates. The degree is a classified degree but without specialization and the program is full course system.
Inter and Intra University transfers
The department shall allow intra university transfer according to available space and in line with university regulations. For interuniversity transfer, the department can consider transfer from related faculties and disciplines. However, the department has the prerogative for discretionary transfer from faculty of sciences or basic medical sciences from any recognized university and such transfer cannot go beyond 200 level. Other factors to be considered are:
i. Senior Secondary School Certificate with credit in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English language.
- Relevant score in UTME
- Cumulative grade point (CGPA) not less than 4.0 out of 5 points with no outstanding carry over courses.
- Candidate from other university should have taken and passed relevant courses in their respective Universities in addition to the above requirement [i-iii]
- Candidate who has been asked to withdraw from other faculty and / or university shall not be considered for admission into the department.
