You are welcome to the site of the first Faculty of Medical Rehabilitation in Nigeria. The Faculty is committed to training students in all Medical Rehabilitation programmes so as to build a better society by rehabilitating the deserving clients whose functional capabilities and activities participations would have been limited by diseases, injuries or birth defects.

 

Faculty of Medical Rehabilitation is currently accommodating Physiotherapy and Prosthetics and Orthotics Departments and training students for the degrees of Bachelor of Physiotherapy [B. Physiotherapy] and Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics [B.PO] respectively. The Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics also runs a conversion programme for holders of Higher National Diplomas in Prosthetics and Orthotics for training for the award of the degree of B.PO in UNIMED. Other programmes that are undergoing preparation for resource verification [by the National University Commission (NUC)] to admit the first set of students are Bachelor of Speech and Language Therapy [B.SLT] and Bachelor of Audiology [B. Aud].

 

Medical Rehabilitation is a set of measures that assist individuals who experience, or are likely to experience disability, to achieve and maintain optimal functioning in interaction with their environments. It is creative procedure that includes the cooperative efforts of various medical specialists and associates in other health, technical and environmental fields, to improve the physical, mental, social and vocational aptitudes of people/clients with functional limitations with the objectives of preserving and improving their ability to live happily and productively on the same level and with the same opportunities as their neighbours.

The programmes of the faculty are prepared to address the sufferings, dependence, isolation/exclusion and tendency to poverty of those who are limited in activity participation by pain, diseases, trauma (injuries) and birth defects. Each of the disciplines [ Physiotherapy, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Speech and Language Therapy and Audiology] has the curriculum of training with objectives of promoting, preserving and restoring the optimal functions of the human body throughout life and in all ages.

 

They have their professional status in health care services which also include prevention of ill-health and injuries. Rehabilitative care in the professions also compliments medicine and surgery in multi/interdisciplinary team approach for comprehensive and holistic health care delivery.

 

Each of the programmes runs for 5 years except for candidates who come in with Direct Entry (DE) mode of admission into Year 2 (200 Level).

DE students normally spend 4 years. The national regulatory body of all the professions is the Medial Rehabilitation Therapists [Registration] Board of Nigeria.
