You are welcome to the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, Nigeria. Our Department is one of the foundation components of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at UNIMED. It was established on April 22, 2015, to offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programs leading to the award of B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry. It also provides instruction for Biochemistry to Medical, Dental, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science and Physiotherapy students.
The Department of Biochemistry is located presently on the main University Campus at Odosida, Ondo City. It is well equipped with a teaching and research laboratory, lecture rooms, staff offices, seminar/conference room, and e-library. It is pioneered by team-spirited, intellectual, proficient and result-oriented members of Academic and Non-academic (Administrative and Technical) staff.
Our Department is fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). Our faculty has successfully conducted professional exams for three consecutive cohorts of medical and dental students. The Department currently has students in 100 to 400 levels, pursuing their B.Sc degree in Biochemistry. During the B. Sc program, students are exposed to excellent lectures, practical and world-class research.
The mission of the Department of Biochemistry at UNIMED is to employ teaching and research for the creation of knowledge that would be used in tackling health and educational problems in Nigeria and the world at large.
Therefore, the Department of Biochemistry would continue to impart our students with extensive theoretical and practical knowledge to make them stand out among their counterparts in other Nigerian universities. We believe you are ready for the ride.
OBJECTIVES
The department is committed to teaching, research and training through creation of knowledge that contributes to Nigeria’s aspirations to attain global competitiveness in health care delivery and health education.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
The Bachelor of Science (BSc.) programme in Biochemistry aims at producing graduates who are well equipped with knowledge to help them tackle problems through basic and applied research. Emphasis will be laid on establishing a sound knowledge on the recent advances in Biochemistry and the application of these tools in health and food/beverage industry. The Bsc programme will also introduce students to research methodology, research ethics and grant writing. Graduates of the programme will be well equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge to make them eligible for higher degree studies in any aspect of Biochemistry and related disciplines.
