On behalf of the entire family of Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, I welcome all our fresh and returning students to the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo. This University is the pioneer Specialized Medical Institution in the annals of higher education in Nigeria. It is not just a pioneer, but as at today, it is the first University of its kind in Nigeria and third in Africa. Its unique status thus confers on it the responsibility to render quality service (in training and research) to those in her immediate environment, and even beyond.

 

Your choice of this University, especially in your chosen area (Human Nutrition and Dietetics) is definitely a wise one. This programme is designed to produce Nutritionist/Dietitian capable of formulating and planning diets for all groups of people in hospitals, schools, catering establishments, food industries, ministries and social welfare agencies. Specifically, the degree holder should be able to:

1.0

Prepare therapeutic diets to prescription.

2.0

Undertake nutrition and dietetics field survey under supervision.

3.0

Assist in the planning of menu in Catering and food industries.

4.0

Carry out basic catering operations.

5.0

Act as Diet supervisors in Hospitals, Hotels, Schools, Industries, Canteen and Social Welfare agencies.

6.0

Plan and administer public enlightenment programme on nutrition.

7.0

Assist in assessing and formulating the nutritional qualities of food products in food industries.

OUTCOMES:  The student will understand the functions and role of nutrients, their requirements and the effect of deficiency and excess

The student wil understand the concept of an adequate diet and the importance of nutrients in recommended Dietary Allowances.
