I urge you to avail yourselves of the unique opportunities to acquire knowledge in feta-maternal medicine, family and reproductive health, oncology, and urogynaecology as well as fertility and assisted reproduction. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the programme, the student should have acquired knowledge, skills and a positive attitude which will enable him/her to:
a) Recognize the principles and practice of O&G.
b) Obtain relevant clinical history, elicit all the clinical signs and record them systematically.
c) Demonstrate knowledge of preconception care, including the impact of genetics, medical conditions and environmental factors on maternal health and fetal development.
d) Explain the normal physiologic changes of pregnancy including interpretation of common diagnostic studies.
e) Manage common obstetrical and gynaecological emergencies and high risk cases, prevent their occurrences or refer patients safely, as appropriate.
f) Understand the principles and practice of antenatal care both as a form of preventive medicine and health education
g) Work within a health team and acquire some leadership qualities
h) Understand the principles underlying good bedside manners, ethical standards and a deep respect and concern for patients.
In clinical practice, the objectives above will be attained through skill acquisition in:
i. Obtaining a history from a pregnant woman.
ii. Obtaining a history from a patient with gynaecological complaints.
iii. Conducting a satisfactory physical examination on patients.
iv. Relating the normal menstrual cycle to the physical findings and ovulation.
v. Knowing the principles of pelvic examination and the instruments used in routine practice.
vi. Understanding terminologies in obstetrics and gynaecology.
vii. Managing common obstetrics and gynaecological emergencies.
Scope and Reach
The University of Medical Sciences (abbreviated UNIMED) is sited in Ondo City to address the immediate needs for training, research and service delivery in Ondo State and its environs in all aspects of health care. In addition, it is designed as a world-class institution that focuses on addressing the human resource and health care needs of all. The Department of O&G is the bed rock on which the modest success of the University and her affiliated Teaching Hospital is built. The successful activities of the Mother and Child Hospital, as a component of the Abiye (safe motherhood) programme, effectively reduced maternal and perinatal mortality. This contributed greatly to Ondo state attaining The Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.
In 2015, the Department of O&G of the Mother and Child Hospital acquired post graduate accreditations by the National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria and West African College of Surgeons. These accreditations have been passed on to the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital. The course content of the department reflects the major sub-specialties of the O&G discipline which are:
1. Fetal and Maternal Medicine (FMM)
2. Oncology and Uro-Gynaecology (OUG)
3. Reproductive and Family Health (RFH)
4. Fertility and Assisted Reproduction (FAR)
