The Legal Services Unit was established under the office of the Vice-Chancellor. The unit was established to cater to the increasing legal needs of the university. Consequently, because of the need to advise the University Administration on the legal needs of the University and possible litigation arising from Staff, Students of the university and other individuals or bodies, the establishment of the Unit was deemed necessary.
The Unit also provides legal advice and support to the university on a wide range of legal matters, including contracts, compliance, intellectual property, and regulatory issues. The Legal Practitioners in the Unit oversee the running of the in-house legal problems of the university.
The duties the Unit performs are as follows:
a. Provides legal advice to the University
b. Drafts all legal instruments affecting the University.
c. Takes charge of all legal matters in the University.
d. Membership/Secretary of some University Committees.
e. Secretary of University-owned Companies.
f. Any other function that may be assigned to the Unit either by the Vice-Chancellor or any other arm of the University on legal matters.
The Principal Legal Officer serves as Head of the Unit and is directly responsible to the Vice-Chancellor.
