UNIMED VC Fatusi, 38 Others, Elected Nigerian Academy of Medicine Fellows

 

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) Ondo city in Ondo state, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, has been elected a fellow of the  Nigerian Academy of Medicine (NAMed).

 

According to the Secretary of NAMed, Prof. Oluwole Atoyebi, The UNIMED VC was elected alongside 38 other eminent scholars for the 2020/2021 cohort after fulfilling the stringent criteria for various specialities of the merit-based organization. 

 

Fatusi, a public health and community medicine specialist, was a 2001/2002 Packard-Gates Leadership fellow at the University of Washington, USA and a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians in Community Health. He also worked previously as a Reproductive Health Adviser for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) programme in Nigeria, Provost of College of Health Sciences at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, and Director of International Research for Guttmacher Institute, New York. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987 with distinction in Community Health. He won the Federal Government award for the best candidate in Part I examinations of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Public Health in 1992 and  graduated from the International Master of Public Health programme of the Hebrew University, Hadassah, Israel with summa cum laude honours  and won 

 

As a leading expert in Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal and Adolescent Health, Fatusi has led several national health-related research initiatives, in addition to consulting for many government agencies as well as international development organizations. 

 

In his first year as Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED and as part of his drive to deepen medical research and training, he established the faculty of medical rehabilitation in the institution. The first of its kind in any Nigerian university. Under his leadership, UNIMED also established the first full-fledged School of Public Health in Nigeria.

 

He is the Vice-President (Sub-Saharan Africa) for the International Association of Adolescent Health (IAAH) and a member of the Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing. 

 

Interestingly, his wife, Prof Olawunmi Fatusi, a foremost professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery and past Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife is also among the newly elected Fellows.

 

Fatusi's latest honour in his profession is another recognition of his outstanding contributions and performance in the fields of medical training and research in Nigeria and on the global stage.
