Welcome to the Website of the Department of Microbial Pathology in the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo City, Nigeria. Solving the problems posed to human health by infectious diseases is one of the biggest challenges facing the medical community today.  Our young and vibrant Department is providing an exciting environment for you to acquire in-depth knowledge of microbial and parasitic agents of human disease.  We give priority to preparing you for these challenges by paying extra attention to your academic work and providing guidance that will enable you to become excellent doctors of tomorrow.

                                                         

The Department of Microbial Pathology at UNIMED has recruited experienced lecturers and researchers that rank among the best in the world, and we are investing a great deal of our time and other resources towards the growth and development of our Department. We have also made some innovations in our teaching methods that will enhance your skills in the laboratory diagnosis of microbial and parasitic infections.

Course Curriculum

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

Part II MBBS and Part IIB BDS

1. The Department of microbiology comprises the following units;

          I.  Bacteriology

          II. Virology

          III. Parasitology

          IV. Immunology

          V. Mycology

2. Each unit is to be headed by a consultant with special interest in such area. All non-consultants are to work under the consultants in the Department. This curriculum is subject to review from time to time as the need arises.

The curriculum consist of the following

I.             Pre-Clinical

 Cell and Body Defense [200L]

Introduction to Medical Microbiology and Parastiology, Structure and general properties of micro organisms, including bacteria, protozoa, fungi and viruses.

General introduction to parasites and parasitism, various tissue responses to parasitic infections, intestinal round worms

II.           Clinical [400L]

Introductory Pathology Posting

These include sterilization and disinfection,

Pathology of micro –organisms, host-bacterial interactions, Collection, transportation and examination of samples, immunity to infections and immunodeficiency states.

Parasitology topic include principles and concepts of medical parasitology, larva migrans, filariasis, Cysticercosis, Dracunculiasis, Dibothriocephaliasis, Echinococcosis,

 

Virology topics include pathogenesis of viral infections, mutation and gene transfers, Basic Gram negative bacilli Enterobacteriaceae E Coil, Salmonella, Shigella, proteus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Serratia, pseudomonas, Bacteroides, Haemophilus, Brucellosis, Chancroid.

A.   Anaerobic infections: Anaerobic cocci,Clostridia and Bacteroides,Toxin –producing bacteria-Diphtheria,Botulish,Tetanus and other clostridial infections[Gas gangrene Cellulitis,puerperal sepsis] cholera. Mycobacterial disease; Tuberculosis,Atypical Mycobacterial infection,Leprosy.Listeria infections, Chlamydial infections Spirochaetal infections Venereal treponematosis [syphilis] Non –venereal treponematosis [Yaws, pinta, Bejel] Relapsing fever

B.   Fungal infections: Candida albicans,Crypococcus neoformans, Histoplasmosis, Aspergillosis,  Blastomycosis,  paracoccidiomycosis,  Coccidiomycosis,  Basidiomycosis, Mucor, Norcardiosis [Maduromycosis], Aspergillosis, Rickettsiosis, Viral infection , Respiratory  (lnfluenza  common  cold, parainfluenza, mycoplasma) Enteric (ECHO, Coxsackie) Disease with muco-cutaneous lesions (measles, small pox, cowpox, chickenpox).

C.   Viral Infections: Yellow fever, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Herpes group of virus, Cytomegalovirus, Hepatitis viruses, Papilloma Virus, Rota virus. Disease with lymphoid lesions (LGV, Mumps, Infectious monocleosis).

D.   Protozoan infections: Amoebiasis, Malaria, Trypanosomiasis, Toxoplasmosis, Pneumocystis carini, Helminthic infections: intestinal nematodes (hookworm, roundworm, pinworm, whipworm), Tissue nematodes (Trichinosis, Filariasis), Trematodes (Schistosomiasis) Cestodes (Tapeworms). As shown above, the curriculum in infectious diseases is very extensive. Much of the curriculum on bacterial infection is covered during the introductory pathology posting (phase 1), introduction to clinical clerkship and by bedside teaching (phase 2), and phase 3 teaching which includes Nosocomial infections, septic shock, malaria, infective diarrhea, meningitis, typhoid fever, Tetanus, Influenza.
