It's a pleasure to welcome you to the Faculty of Nursing Science, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo city, Ondo State. Since evolving from the Department of Nursing Science in 2018, we've dedicated ourselves to excellence in nursing education. As a degree-awarding faculty, we're proud to have graduated five sets of Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc) students who are making significant contributions to healthcare both locally and internationally. Our faculty is composed of four dynamic departments:

 

  • Department of Adult Health and Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing
  • Department of Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health Nursing
  • Department of Community Health Nursing
  • Department of Nursing Education & Administration

 

In 2022, we expanded our academic offerings to include postgraduate studies, and we now proudly run both Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs. We're committed to advancing nursing knowledge and preparing the next generation of leaders in the field.

 

Our Faculty stands at the forefront of nursing education, research, and practice, dedicated to preparing compassionate, competent, and innovative professionals who are equipped to meet the evolving health needs of our society. We take pride in providing a student-centered learning environment that combines academic excellence with a strong practical training in our skills’ laboratories and the University of Medical Sciences Teaching hospital, Ondo and other reputable hospitals in Ondo State, where we have supportive preceptors for clinical supervision. Our programs are designed to develop not only strong clinical skills, but also leadership, critical thinking, and research capacity, ensuring that our graduates contribute meaningfully to innovative research and healthcare delivery at local, national, and global levels.

 

The Faculty is committed to fostering an atmosphere of collaboration, integrity, and service. With highly qualified lecturers, modern teaching facilities, and strong community engagement, we empower our students to excel in nursing and to become agents of positive change in healthcare. 1.   Uphold the academic standards by UNIMED Ondo State.

 

2.   Provide a milieu conducive to learning and practice of good quality nursing.

 

3.   Prepare graduates of this programme as Nurse Clinicians, who through their practice will provide quality care to clients.

 

4.   Educate nurses who will be able to carry out research aimed at improving the quality of nursing care.

 

5.   Direct educational activities towards the development of a health team approach to health care.

 

6.   Produce graduates with academic training that will enable them pursue postgraduate degree in the different nursing specialties.

 

7.   Educate nurses who can set up their own practice.

 

8.   Educate nurses who can provide advancement in knowledge and generate idea in the practice of Nursing.

 

9.   Produce competent professionals that will be able to formulate and interpret policies relevant to Nursing.

 

10.  Organise continuing education programmes for its faculty members and for nurses outside the University.

 

11. Support the participation of faculty members and students in University and professional affairs.

 

12.  Formulate and maintain active recruitment programmes

 

13.  Develop and maintain audio-visual, and other learning resources.

 

14.  Formulate future plans and seek funds to maintain its educational and training programmes

 

15.  Equip nurses with skills to be professionals.

 

16.  Produce nurses with the ability to use critical thinking and decision   making skills effectively.

 

17.   Graduate nurses who can function effectively and efficiently in the public, private and international establishments using their wide knowledge and skills acquired during training and working experience.

 

18.   Evaluate the educational programmes of the Faculty in the light of:

               

                i.   the educational objectives;

 

                ii.   the health needs of the nation;

 

                iii.  their adequacy as foundations for further studies;

 

                iv.  emerging trends in nursing education globally; and

 

                v.  emerging trends in curriculum development and implementation

 

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

The Faculty of Nursing Science (FNS) is a degree awarding Faculty. The four departments contribute harmoniously to produce exceptional Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) graduates. The departments are:

Department of Adult & Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing

Department of Community Health Nursing

Department of Maternal, Neonatal & Child Health Nursing

Department of Nursing Education & Administration

 

The Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) programme is a generic nursing programme developed in response to societal needs and demand for professional nurses who are educated in institutions of higher learning.  It prepares professional Nurse/Midwife/Public Health Nurse Practitioners capable of assuming professional responsibilities in various health delivery agencies including the community and social agencies.  The BNSc. Programme shall run for five academic years/ sessions for UTME entry candidates and four years /sessions for direct entry candidates.

 

 

In addition to the departments, the Institute of Professional Nursing & Midwifery Education (IPNME) is domiciled in the Faculty of Nursing Science. The main purpose of the Institute is to facilitate implementation of the various reforms in nursing education in the country; and to provide an avenue for professional development needs of nurses to be adequately met.
