The Head of the Department of Radiography, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Mrs Josephine Iyefe, has described radiographers as versatile health professionals whose expertise extends far beyond direct patient care.
Iyefe stated this at the First Radiography Induction Ceremony of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, held at the Laje campus of the institution.
Speaking on the theme, “What is Versatility in Radiography?” she said the radiographer’s versatility lies not only in the advanced equipment they operate, but also in the multiple roles they play within the healthcare system.
She explained that radiographers can specialise in various advanced clinical areas, including Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Fluoroscopy and Interventional Radiology, Mammography, Ultrasound, Bone Densitometry, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy for cancer treatment.
Iyefe added that since the discovery of X-rays in 1895, radiography has experienced continuous innovation, offering practitioners a dynamic and ever-evolving career path.
Addressing the inductees, the Vice-Chancellor, UNIMED, Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, charged them to deploy their knowledge to contribute meaningfully to the health sector, noting their exposure to state-of-the-art training facilities.
“You must, however not rest on your oars. I urge you to deploy your knowledge to impact the world, particularly the health sector, positively. I have no doubt that the University has the best demonstration room in the country, and to have been trained here makes you the best.”the VC said.
The Acting Dean, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Dr Remilekun Akinrinmade, described radiography as a promising profession and urged the inductees to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations guiding the practice.
A total of 35 new radiographers took their professional oaths, administered by the Deputy Registrar of the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria, Mr Chidiebere Thaddeus, who represented the Registrar/CEO.
They were thereafter admitted into the profession by Dr Musa Yusuf, President of the Association of Radiographers of Nigeria.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of the Overall Best Graduating Student Award to Victor Ayomide Abiodun, the pioneer President of UNIMED’s Students’ Union Government.
