Science fosters innovation, problem solving – UNIMED VC

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo city, Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, has said that scientific progress thrives when diverse perspectives work together aimed at fostering innovation, enhancing problem-solving, and increasing the impact of research findings.

Prof.Adejuyigbe said this when UNIMED in collaboration with the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), Ondo State chapter, joined the global scientific community to mark the IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast with the theme “Many Voices, One Science.”held in Ondo.

The VC, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Olanrewaju Osho, said diverse scientific teams comprising individuals from different backgrounds, cultures, genders, and disciplines tend to ask more creative questions, adopt novel methodologies, and generate more highly cited impactful research compared to homogeneous groups.

She urged the participants to build a community where every scientist, especially women, can contribute and thrive.

Coordinator of the Women in Chemistry, Ondo State Chapter, Dr. Funmilayo Agbaye, described the programme as a platform for strengthening networks, mentoring young female scientists, and amplifying women’s voices in research and innovation.

Agbaye said science promotes diverse perspectives, challenges conventional wisdom, leading to better, more innovative solutions to complex, multi-layered problems.

Also, Chairman of CSN, Ondo State, Prof. Victoria Akpambang, highlighted the significant contributions of women chemists in Nigeria, while calling attention to the need for continued advocacy against gender bias and limited representation.

In her keynote lecture, Prof. Omotade Oloyede emphasised that science has become a global conversation driven by interdisciplinary collaboration.

She explained how chemistry contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals, including breakthroughs in agriculture, healthcare, green chemistry and environmental sustainability.

The highlight of the event was the recognition of the contributions of some individuals such as Professor Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Isiaka Amoo of FUTA, Dr. Olusegun Agbaje of UNIMED, among others, to scientific growth and community development.
