UNIMED Governing Council Approves Promotion of Five Readers to Professors and One Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor

The Governing Council of the University of Medical Sciences at its Extraordinary meeting held on Wednesday, 15th April, 2026 has ratified the promotion of 5 Readers to the rank of Full Professors and a Senior Lecturer to an Associate Professor.

The Professors include Lawal Adewale Oyeneyin (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology), Michael Olumide Gbala (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology), Joshua Olajire Babayemi (Department of Biosciences and Biotechnology), Edosa Samuel Uhumwangho (Department of Biochemistry) and Adegbiji Waheed Atilade (Department of Surgery). Dr Kayode Olayiwola Adepoju of the Department of Health Information Management was also promoted from the position of Senior Lecturer to Reader.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Aderonke Adejuyigbe, described the promotions as a testament to sustained academic excellence and meaningful contributions to society. She noted that the honourees have distinguished themselves through rigorous scholarship, impactful research, and dedicated service to both the university and the wider community.

According to her, the elevation is not only a reward for years of hard work but also an acknowledgment of the vital role the beneficiaries continue to play in advancing knowledge and strengthening the institution’s reputation. She emphasized that their achievements reflect the university’s commitment to fostering academic distinction and innovation.

Professor Adejuyigbe congratulated the newly promoted scholars, urging them to view the recognition as a call to greater responsibility. She encouraged them to sustain their momentum and continue pushing the boundaries of research and professional practice.

“The university and the global community need your expertise now more than ever,” she stated, adding that their continued dedication will inspire younger academics and contribute significantly to national development.

While the promotion of the Professors took retroactive effect from 1st October, 2023, that of the Reader took effect from 15th April,2026.
